Marine Debris

The ocean has been used as the global sewer for centuries and it’s now a sad fact that there is more plastic in the ocean than plankton.  We are near a critical mass situation in many ways.  Scientists estimate that around the world, up to one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and sea turtles die each year from eating plastic.  Approximately 300,000 Cetaceans (whales and dolphins) die in entanglements annually.  But we can turn it around.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Refuse Plastic.

   Plastic Pollution Facts:

*Approx. 380 billion plastic bags are used in the United States every year. That’s more than 1,200 bags per US resident, per year.

*An estimated 12 million barrels of oil is required to make that many plastic bags.

*Only 1 to 2% of plastic bags in the USA end up getting recycled.

*The United Nations Environment Program estimates that there are 46,000 pieces of plastic litter floating in every square mile of ocean.

*Thousands of marine animals and more than 1 million birds die each year as a result of plastic pollution.

What You Can Do...
You can start using reusable tote bags and stop using one-use plastic shopping bags.  You can also start using reusable stainless steel water bottles.  Filter your own water and stop using plastic water bottles.

What we are doing...
We patrol 1,000 square miles of ocean searching for and removing marine debris.  We have adopted remote beaches for beach clean-ups.  We also perform underwater debris removal from dozens of coral reefs.
